Michael Manning
1991 zog er nach San Francisco, um sich dort ganz auf seine Talente als Comic- und Erotikillustrator zu konzentrieren. Dort avancierte er bald zu einer gefragten Größe in der S&M-/Fetish-/Sex-Szene. Er produzierte Erotic-Comic-Alben wie Lumenagerie (1996, herausgegeben von NBM Publishing) oder Cathexis (1997) und entwarf zudem Fetisch-Kostüme für Shows oder Events der Szene.
Mittlerweile wurde seine Fetisch-Kunst in New York, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, Japan und Italien ausgestellt. Sein Album „The Spider Garden” mit Schwarz-Weiß-Illustrationen wurde bereits in Frankreich, Italien und Deutschland veröffentlicht.
Mannings Kunst wurde durch japanische Animes, Fantasy-Kunstbücher, amerikanische und europäische Comics sowie die Mythologien vergangener Kulturen beeinflusst. Er ist zudem ein großer Verehrer der Symbolisten (zum Beispiel Rodin) und der Präraffaeliten des 19. Jahrhunderts sowie der klassischen Arbeiten der japanischen Künstler Tsukioka Yoshitoshi und Utagawa Kuniyoshi.
Manning unterhält im Mission District in San Francisco zusammen mit seinem Partner Lyn Gaza (Fotograf und Filmemacher) ein Studio, in dem er nicht nur seine Sammlung von Kunstbüchern und elektronischer/psychedelischer Musik erweitert. Wenn er gerade nicht arbeitet, kann man ihn durchaus in der näheren Umgebung seines Studios auf dem Fahrrad begegnen, das ihn zu seinen Lieblingsmusikläden und Copy-Shops bringt.
Manning zeichnet sehr plakativ und kommt ohne viele Schattierungen und Grautöne aus. Seine Arbeiten sind meist schwarz-weiß und leben von ihrem schwungvollen Strich. Dieser versucht nicht, mit Schraffuren und zeichnerischen Schnörkeln das klare Gesamtbild seiner Zeichnungen und Illustrationen zu zerstören.

Michael Manning
was born in 1963 in Queens, New York City (USA), and grew up on the northern coast of Massachusetts. He moved to Boston to study film and animation at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. In 1987, his first black-and-white erotic comics were published, which he produced alongside his work as an animator and director of commercials and music videos.
In 1991, he moved to San Francisco to focus entirely on his talents as a comic and erotic illustrator. There, he soon became a sought-after figure in the S&M, fetish, and sex scene. He produced erotic comic albums such as Lumenagerie (1996, published by NBM Publishing) and Cathexis (1997), and also designed fetish costumes for shows and events in the scene.
His fetish art has since been exhibited in New York, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, Japan, and Italy. His album “The Spider Garden,” featuring black-and-white illustrations, has already been published in France, Italy, and Germany.
Manning’s art has been influenced by Japanese anime, fantasy art books, American and European comics, and the mythologies of past cultures. He is also a great admirer of the Symbolists (such as Rodin) and the 19th-century Pre-Raphaelites, as well as the classic works of Japanese artists Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and Utagawa Kuniyoshi.
Manning runs a studio in San Francisco’s Mission District together with his partner Lyn Gaza (a photographer and filmmaker), where he does more than just expand his collection of art books and electronic/psychedelic music. When he’s not working, you might well run into him on his bike in the vicinity of his studio, riding to his favorite music stores and copy shops.
Manning’s drawings are very striking and do not rely on many shades or grays. His works are mostly black and white and thrive on their dynamic lines. He avoids using hatching or decorative flourishes that might detract from the clear overall composition of his drawings and illustrations. |
